Invitation
Digital Image Group Will Not Meet Until Further Notice
by Richard Nichols
Tuesday, 15 November 2011
Hello, Digital Image & Video Enthusiasts,

The Digital Image Group will not meet this month or in December. We will continue to add some pictures and the videos that have been presented over the past year and a half that have not made it up onto the DIG website. This will allow us to catch up after over 3 and a half years of continuous meetings.

Before we resume DIG, we will determine the actual needs and demand of the visual arts community for the services that DIG provides. Our attendance has dwindled below 16 people, which is the lowest since the first meeting we had, 42 months ago. There is no need for us to move forward with this initiative unless the support of the community is there because it does require quite a number of labor and meeting hours per month.

We have had a great run over these 42 meetings and I would guess that at least 100 people have presented their work in all, maybe more. Over the next few months we will be working towards strengthening the Sweetwater Camera Club (our first priority) and seeking a better meeting model. Right now we have a “serial” model, meaning that we can only have one speaker and presentation at a time. This makes sense on one level, but the original intent was to provide a place where people could get questions answered and demonstrations would have as much time as travelogues and other assorted slide shows.

This will be a welcome break for some, including those of us who put on the show. We haven’t had time to work on our own visual art because of the time dedicated to putting on the shows. So, please enjoy the rest of the Fall here in west Georgia and beyond. We will eventually try to come back with better ideas about how to make this group more successful.

For those of you who have pictures hanging in the Chamber of Commerce building, never fear. Norma and I just signed up for another whole year of membership with the Douglas County Chamber of Commerce and we are still hanging photos and changing out pictures. If you need your pictures back, we will be glad to meet you there or return them to you. If you would like us to hang more pictures, there will be some spaces available as we take down a few at a time. Our goal is to change out the entire exhibit over time and add new images. The Digital Image Group is no longer a member of the Chamber, since we couldn’t find a representative who would actually show up at any of the Chamber events.

If you or someone you know has given us money for either an Irfanview tutorial disk or for a subscription to DIG, please let me know and your money will be refunded to you. I took some money from a few people for advance sales of Irfanview tutorials a couple of years ago, but time and work has prevented me from ever finding the uninterrupted time necessary to put together this tutorial.

In the meantime, onwards and upwards . . . DIG isn’t dead, but it needs a break, for sure.

Hello, photographers, videographers, artists and digital image enthusiasts,

You are invited to attend the 40th meeting of the Digital Image Group tomorrow, Thursday evening at 6:30 P.M. in Downtown Douglasville!

We meet at the Douglasville School of Art, located in beautiful Downtown Douglasville at 6774 West Broad Street, Douglasville, GA. If you know where Fabiano’s and Gumbeaux’s Restaurants are, it is 2 blocks west of there, heading away from Atlanta. You may visit the Douglasville School’s website at http://www.douglasvilleschoolofart.com .

If you came last month, you were treated to many beautiful photographs (examples are attached) and an excellent video of Jerry and Marge Frost’s recent trip to Alaska. If you would like to see their video, please go to www.digitalimagegroup.com . The video is on the front page. For his trip, Jerry traveled light, carrying only a point-and-shoot camera. Upon his return to Douglasville, he processed the images in the HDR (high dynamic range) software Photomatix, then used ProShowGold to create his multimedia video masterpiece. I used a program called Moyea Flash Video Standard to convert the video for streaming on the web.

If you visit the Gallery section of the Digital Image Group website you will discover that we have uploaded all photos presented by our members during the past several months.

The gallery is located at http://www.digitalimagegroup.org/photo/index.php?folder=/2011/ . We now have over 6000 pictures displayed in our galleries!

A further note about our meeting location: You may park anywhere along Broad Street, or on any of the side streets, or in the public parking space across from City Hall (which will require that you walk a block and a half to the location). I have it on good authority that the “2 hour parking” spaces in this area are safe for you to park as long as you like without fear of ticketing, since the Douglasville Police Department has now moved out of the center of town. In the past, the police department needed the spaces for themselves.

The best way to describe where this is, is to imagine yourself standing in front of the Old Courthouse. Just to the right of this building, is the oldest building in downtown. The very first storefront in that building is where we will meet.

We do not have a lot of chairs, so if you have a folding chair, please bring it. Please do not leave your chairs in the building once you decide to leave the meeting. We are actively working towards finding a source for inexpensive comfortable chairs for future meetings.

Bring some of your work to show, if you like or come just to watch. Some of us give hardware and software demonstrations as well.

Thanks again to Dr. Robby Pope for allowing us to meet in his art studio! Dress casually. Arrive any time at 6:30 p.m. or thereafter and stay as long as you like. Some of our meetings last as long as 10:30 p.m. but you are welcome to leave whenever you have had enough. You are welcome throughout the meeting to initiate discussions of the photos, videos and demonstrations you see. Bring your own chair if you can. There will be several seats available for those who arrive without one.

Drinks will be provided but you are welcome to bring snacks to share with the crowd. Hope to see you there!

Richard
